Learning During COVID-19

Big Picture Values in the Virtual Classroom

With the School District of Philadelphia mandating remote learning through at least mid-November, Big Picture Philadelphia has partnered with el Centro de Estudiantes and Vaux Big Picture High School to implement a comprehensive remote plan for the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year which includes individualized remote learning blended with limited, safe on-site opportunities including on-site learning pods in which specialized staff provide individualized project, tutoring, social-emotional, post-secondary, and technology support by appointment only (with no more than 20-30 students in the building at a time). At Vaux BPHS, students and families can also access health care supports.

*It's important to note that none of these supports are staffed with teachers or school administrators who are working hard to engage and teach our students virtually.

Student attendance is being tracked daily by individual Advisors (teachers) and in-person attendance at the pods is being similarly tracked by Advisors and program staff, all of which is communicated to the School District of Philadelphia (SDP).

All students will continue to participate in Real World Learning/Learning Through Internships (RWL/LTI) twice per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, in-person internships are available on a limited basis. Alternative internships or one-on-one/group mentoring and collaborative projects with regional professionals are being offered as remote internship options. *Some students at both schools have the option of connecting with their mentors in a live setting but only if the student's family and the mentor sign legal waivers.
