The role that Principals and Teachers (Advisors) play at our schools can be quite different from other conventional middle and high schools. This difference has to do with our student-centered philosophy and our curricular structure, as well as our emphasis on providing on-going professional development to programs in the Big Picture network. The success of our model relies on the talent and dedication of our Advisors and Principals/ School Leaders.
What qualities do we look for in Big Picture Principals and Advisors?
- Patience to work with each student at his or her own pace
- Compassion and ability to build a strong relationship with students
- Entrepreneurial and innovative
- Ability to work within a flexible environment
- Embraces change
- Experience and adeptness at working on a team
- Ability to contribute to developing, implementing and improving systems on an on-going basis
- Passion for education
- Ability to work with “at-risk youth”
- Proven resilience working in challenging classroom situations
- Experience working with student-centered practices is a plus
